We began the week by learning about a special celebration, Lunar New Year. 2023 is the year of the rabbit!
We have been looking in depth at owls and bats. The children have enjoyed exploring our ‘Bat Cave’ and had a go at drawing a bat, remembering to include all their features! The children loved getting messy when painting a bat using their finger tips!
We watched some video clips about bats and owls and learned a lot of facts about them too! Did you know bats sleep upside down and owls can turn their heads almost all the way around!!!
Our key text this week was ‘Owl Babies’ and the children enjoyed acting out the story with puppets. We have done pencil control activities, including ‘flying’ the owls back to their nest holes. We also listened to ‘The Gruffalo’ and a non fiction book called ‘Night Animals’.
In Phonics the children were introduced to ‘sound talking’ (like a robot!) In the walk through the woods at night, they had to listen carefully and spot what was seen, for example the ‘f-o-x’ and the ‘m-oo-n’. We had pictures to help us. It was a bit tricky at first, but we soon grasped the idea of ‘sound talking’. We will continue to practise this important blending skill.
We have also been practising writing our names.
In Maths the children were playing a ‘subitising’ game, where they had to say how many nocturnal animals there were, just by looking at the pattern of how they were laid out, a bit like the dots on a dice! We practised showing how many animals there were, using our fingers. We also played a game with woodland animals, where some went missing and we had to count carefully thinking about ‘more than’ and ‘less than’.
