French

Intent

At Ernesford Grange Primary, we will encourage and develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We will introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. This will allow us to embed the essential skills of listening, reading speaking and writing as well as building on the children’s cultural capital, so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures.

The laying down of the foundations of language learning will give each child the opportunity to develop a desire to continue improving their linguistic skills throughout life.

Implementation

French is taught as a standalone subject. This may consist of weekly sessions or as a block to gain continuity in learning. There are short bursts of pronunciation practise by pupils during each week to ensure language skills are build upon.

To ensure clear progression of skills we use the Kapow primary language SoW, which set out learning targets for each year group along with high quality resources, video clips, and teaching tips to enhance provision for children and teachers. There is a clear framework for assessment within this scheme of work for KS2 children.

Impact

When children leave our school, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore, other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language. They will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning in the next stage of their educational journey.
